Ferelden Distances

So I took the map in the Dragon Age RPG Set 1, a ruler, and sat down to map out distances to our favorite places in Ferelden. These measurements were taken along road routes where available on the map to be as accurate as possible. Of course, in the end it's all approximate.

Denerim to Amaranthine = 72 miles

Denerim to Highever = 162 miles

Amaranthine to Highever = 108 miles

Denerim to West Hill = 198 miles

Denerim to Lake Calenhad Docks = 252 miles

Denerim to Circle Tower = 270 miles

Denerim to the mouth of Gherlen's Pass = 324 miles

Denerim to Gates of Orzammar = 351 miles

Mouth of Gherlen's pass to Gates of Orzammar = 27 miles

Denerim to Dragon Peak = 18 miles

Denerim to Lothering = 180 miles

Denerim to Redcliffe Village = 270 miles

Denerim to Redcliffe Castle = 288 miles

Denerim to Ostagar = 243 Miles

Denerim to Gwaren = 252 miles

Denerim to South Reach = 117 miles

Denerim to Haven = 342 miles

Lothering to Redcliffe Village = 90 miles

EDIT: got a request for Circle Tower to Lothering, figured I'd add it in: 198 miles

I love you so hard for this. It will help a lot with fanfics Not that I ever actually write anything Someone might find this useful in combination with your estimates. Now you can calculate roughly how long the journey takes!

Thanks!

Wooo! Thank you thank you thank you (also for the email).

Of course, now I'm just cringing like a cringing thing at how completely and ridiculously OFF all of my estimates have... ever, ever been, lawd.

No! Well the good thing about fiction is you can make your own distances? (Though I know many of us try to stay true to some things, like this)

Its not enough to prompt a retcon is it?

Woohoo! This is priceless. Writing my fanfic I had a comment saying travel times were ridiculously long, so I'm glad it IS around as long as I figured it would be >.> I still don't know if my travel time is consistent with the measurements, but it helps to know it would take a good long time to traipse around the whole country. (And O.o; looooooots of walking!)

Very nice. I used to do the Walking to Rivendell challenge for Lord of the Rings. Basically you keep track of your distances, and you figure out where you are on the way from Hobbiton to Rivendell or beyond. Maybe we need to do a Dragon Age Challenge!

Now if I could only figure out Highever to Ostagar that would be SWEET.

My birthday can't get here fast enough. I've been promised a copy of the book...and now I'm DYING to get it. June 29 is too far away!

Okay, question.

Does the RPG Set map have Redcliff to the west side of Lake Calenhad like it's description and book locations says it is or did they go with the in-game location of it being to the South of Lake Calenhad? It's been a little inconsistent depending on where you check.

*bookmarks* And major thanks for doing this as I won't be able to afford to get the RPG books anytime soon.

[info]milia_timmain

May 31 2010, 03:39:50 UTC 1 year ago

It is the same as the in game maps.

The way I look at it, comparing the book location for Redcliffe and where they say Rainesfere is, that the western side of the lake is where Rainesfere is. But that's my own assumption.

No problem :)

You are awesome. Also, wow--based on this, and [info]uzukisaru's estimates, it would take my Tabris and Duncan about 12-15 days to get from Denerim to Ostagar. I don't want to think about how long it would take for my poor mage boy who hasn't been out of the tower in 12 years to get to Ostagar.

Wow, thank you for doing this. I'm so terrible at relative distances.

So I guess Morrigan's 'eve of battle' condition is a metaphorical one since it takes 288 miles to get there.

*snicker* Yeah. Someone pointed out (sometime) that before the night of Morrigan's Dark Ritual, Eamon and Riordan are talking about how they don't know if they can get back to Denerim in just 2 days.

BioWare obviously wasn't really paying attention to distances, either.

Denerim to Redcliffe Village = 270 miles

Holy shit. Doesn't the army do a two day forced march to Denerim at the end of the game?

[info]tersa

June 1 2010, 19:42:15 UTC 1 year ago

Yup.

I suspect BioWare wasn't going for veracity.

I #th the vote to add these numbers to the DA Wiki, but after reading some of the comments, especially for the distances involved for some of the ventures, especially the end battle, I think a caveat should be noted in it that these approximations don't jive with events in the game.

I've heard somewhere that the game designers put forth that the events of the game take about a year, but like a forced two day march over 280 miles...that doesn't exactly make logical sense. :)

I'd bet the country is probably a lot smaller then the RPG indicates, and/or BioWare majorly goofed.

(Out of curiosity, I just looked at distances in England, and did find that the length and breadth is comparable to some of the distances in Ferelden. Huh.)

This is so bloody useful. THANK YOU.

...I don't suppose you've extended it outside of Ferelden to the rest of Thedas, have you? I'm trying to figure out how long it would take to sail to Denerim from Llomeryn.

Stumbling across this just as I get the writing bug is so fortuitous & by golly gum drops, thank you for what you've done :) I've ended up doodling all over a .jpg for your distances as a frame of reference :D

I was looking at Soldier's Peak, talk about a round-about path (follows the base of the mountains westward over the C in Coastlands down to the road above the first T in The North Road), but it's looking like ~219m to Denerim & ~190 to Amaranthine. The whole "maze through mines" really cuts down options for going east.

My numbers were very roughly done (hold a tailor's tape against a monitor anyone?) and would love if there were more accurate numbers :)
